CBIC Makes Virtual Hearings Mandatory for Departmental Proceedings

CBIC GST Updates: The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has issued revised guidelines mandating virtual hearings for all departmental proceedings under the CGST, IGST, Customs Act, Central Excise Act, and Chapter V of the Finance Act.

Under these new directives, personal hearings must now be conducted via Video Conferencing (VC). Physical hearings will only be permitted if specifically requested by the concerned party. This change reverts to CBIC’s original instruction dated 21.08.2020, which initially introduced virtual hearings as a means to enhance procedural efficiency and streamline operations.

The mandate aims to:

  • Improve Accessibility: Allow participants to attend hearings from any location.
  • Enhance Efficiency: Reduce time and costs associated with travel and scheduling.
  • Ensure Transparency: Maintain a digital record of proceedings for better accountability.

These changes align with CBIC’s ongoing efforts to leverage technology for a more effective and user-friendly tax administration system.
